Load balancing is a critical aspect of modern network and server infrastructure. It ensures that incoming traffic is distributed across multiple servers, preventing any single server from becoming overwhelmed. By distributing the workload efficiently, load balancing enhances the availability, reliability, and performance of applications and services. Different load-balancing algorithms are used depending on the specific requirements of the application, each with its advantages and ideal use cases. In this post, we’ll explore some of the most common load-balancing algorithms and how they work.
1. Round Robin
Round Robin is one of the simplest and most commonly used load-balancing algorithms. It works by distributing incoming requests sequentially across a pool of servers. For example, if you have three servers (A, B, and C), the first request goes to A, the second to B, the third to C, and then the cycle repeats. This method is straightforward and effective when all servers have roughly the same processing power and capacity. However, it does not account for differences in server load or performance, which can lead to inefficiencies if some servers are significantly busier than others.
